Over the years great advances have been made in the ability to maintain marine organisms in an artificial environment. The main reason is the increased awareness of the nutritional requirements of different organisms. For years we have had access to many artificial diets, as well as frozen and freeze-dried diets. These are good diets as long as they are produced in a safe and sustainable manner, most frozen and freeze-dried foods are collected from the wild, is this sustainable? I'm not sure, but we are certainly trying to do our part in avoiding depletions of wild-stock by offering cultured organisms only. If you found this website, then you are looking for a live natural feed either as a complete diet or to supplement your current feeding regiment. Mysids are one of the main marine organisms supporting wild marine nurseries, so it only makes sense to incorporate this organism in your feeding regiment. Our goal at EcoAquatics™ is to offer 100% cultured, quality live mysids, whether it is for the purpose of hobbyists maintaining seahorses, corals, finicky eaters, other carnivores or maybe just your in need of a live food while on vacation, we have your fix. We also support commercial aquaculture facilities as well as our wonderful public aquariums. Whatever your project we can supply your needs. Mysids are a generic term for a shrimp-like crustacean from the family mysidacea. Specifically we culture the Opossum shrimp, Americamysis bahia (formerly Mysidopsis bahia) and regularly used in toxicity testing. This mysid is a shallow water animal found throughout the Gulf of Mexico region mainly in and around grassflats, and as we know the grassflats are the nursery for so many marine animals.
USE OF MYSIDS
Great natural food for seahorses, seadragons, pipefish and other marine predators. In reef tanks will act as a food, will feed on detritus, and act as an indicator organism in the event of water quality issues. Population can be kept in a refugium producing juveniles for corals, dwarf seahorses and fry. Great vacation food, will survive in tank allowing predators to feed at will. Be warned the mysids may be consumed very quickly. Can be further nutritionally enhanced by feeding enriched rotifers. We supply an order of rotifers, plus a sample of our Chaete Treat™ (currently we are sending phyto enriched rotifers only) for enrichment with each order. Any size available, from juveniles at ~1/8th inch to adults at ~1/2 inch. Feel free to mix and match for your needs. Please note that mysids of different ages are normally bagged separately. Mysids will not harm any other tank inhabitants, but they are cannilbalistic, feed well while in holding tanks.
